Paperback Editions
The sixth edition published by Golden Press are known
as oval paperbacks because of the oval illustration on the cover. There were
thirty four books published in this format,
and eighteen of them are first editions.

There were many reprints of this edition. The
first printing had an ugly style of font similar to the ugly format and a book
tag on the corner of the second last page, denoting title and number.
The spine number changes in the print runs as does
the placement of the " # in a series" logo that appears on the
cover. The first print run has it in the bottom right corner, while it
appears in the top left corner in later print runs. After going
through my books, I've managed to deduce the following:

Goldencraft Oval
Library Hardbacks
At the same time that Golden Books published the
oval paperbacks, they also released a hardback edition of these books, known as
Goldencraft editions. These editions bear a logo on the back cover of the
book that reads "Selected Goldencraft Edition - For school and library use".
This was continued even when the 1980s square
editions were released. All of the books released in this edition were
also released as a Goldencraft book, and I even have a hard copy of The Secret
of the Mansion that has the normal oval cover, but the interior is identical to
the square edition of this book. This is very unusual!
My collection consists of books 1 to 34 in the oval
edition and 35 to 38 in the square hardback edition. It is believed that
these editions were only made available for sale to schools and libraries, and
most of my copies bear library markings. However, I did manage to find
some copies that are as new and unmarked but I'm unsure where they've been
hiding.
