"Ugly"
Editions
The fifth edition published by Whitman are known
as the thin hardbacks or "uglies" because of the illustrations on the
covers, which does not say a lot for the talents of illustrator, Larry
Frederick.
This edition was first published in 1970, but my
collection of books 9 to fifteen have imprint pages that show dates in Roman
Numerals of 1971. However, number sixteen was published in 1970.
There are a number of features that change throughout my collection and this is
due to two different editions being released - one thick and one thin.
There was only one new title in this series: The
Mystery of the Missing Heiress, which is the last title in this edition.
1. The
Secret of the Mansion
9. The
Happy Valley Mystery
2. The
Red Trailer Mystery
10. The Marshland
Mystery
3. The
Gatehouse Mystery
11. The
Mystery at Bob-White Cave
4. The
Mysterious Visitor
12. The
Mystery of the Blinking Eye
5. The
Mystery Off Glen Road 13. The
Mystery on Cobbett's Island
6. The
Mystery in Arizona
14. The Mystery
of the Emeralds
7. The
Mysterious Code
15. The
Mystery on the Mississippi
8. The
Black Jacket Mystery
16. The
Mystery of the Missing Heiress
There were also several titles published in
paperback and they are extremely rare.
The information provided here covers the books from
my own collection and is not representative of all the books produced at this
time.

Ugly Paperback
Editions
In 1971, at least three of "ugly" or plain editions
of which 16 hardback editions were published, were also published in a soft
cover format. There are varying reports of whether numbers 8-11 or only
9-11 were published in this format, but I own #10 and 11 in this edition and
haven't been able to find any others.
